Classification

Students will learn the art of classifying living things while getting up close and personal with some amazing Australian animals. This program covers Linnaean Classification, producers & consumers, trophic levels, and how fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds & mammals can be sorted and classified based on physical and genetic traits.

Animals

Spiny-leaf Stick Insect - Stick Insects are known as Phasmids which means “phantom”.

Green Tree Frog - Frogs are classified in the Order Anura which means “without tail”.

Frilled-neck Lizard - Only species in genus.

Olive Python - Olive Python Liasis olivaceus Pythons are non-venomous snakes that kill prey via constriction.

Topics Covered

  • Students will learn about why we classify living things into different groups and what features determine which group an animal is classified as.
  • They will learn that what an animal eats determines what type of consumer it is.
  • They will discuss trophic levels as a form of classification – and what animal belongs at which trophic level.
