Ecosystems & Food Webs
How Life is Connected
This resource introduces students to the structure and function of ecosystems, helping them understand how living and non-living components interact to support life. Students explore habitats, niches, and species relationships, and examine how populations and communities form part of larger biomes.
Through engaging activities, students learn to map food webs, understand the flow of energy, and see how changes in one part of an ecosystem can affect others. These activities strengthen ecological knowledge, critical thinking, and an appreciation of the complexity and interconnectedness of natural systems.
🧩 What students will learn
- Understand the components of an ecosystem, including living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) factors
- Explore habitats, niches, populations, communities, and biomes and how organisms interact within them
- Investigate species relationships and roles within a community
- Learn how energy flows through food webs and how organisms are interconnected
- Develop observational and analytical skills by mapping interactions and predicting outcomes in ecosystems
✅ Recommended Learning Levels
Activities are suitable for Years 7–10 and can be adapted for depth or complexity depending on student knowledge.
