‘Clean Shoes’ Design Challenge 🐦👟
Wild birds can travel huge distances and spend lots of time in places we share with them, such as parks, beaches and wetlands. When birds are sick, pathogens can be left behind in the environment. People can then accidentally carry contaminants between places on their shoes.
Shoe-cleaning stations are one way we can think about reducing the spread of contaminants. Can students design one?
- Design a station: In small groups, give students recycled materials and ask them to design a simple “clean feet” station.
- Add the contaminants: Scatter pretend contaminants such as pom-poms, beads or paper pieces on the ground.
- Test it out: Have students walk through the pretend contaminants and then use their station to clean their shoes.
- Improve the design: Students make changes to their station to see if they can remove more of the pretend contaminants.
- Discuss: How could barriers and cleaning stations help reduce the movement of contaminants between places?

What If YouTube Disappeared?
- Imagine: Tell students that YouTube, TV and streaming have disappeared for the day.
- Choose: Ask what they would normally use these things for – learning, entertainment, music or finding information.
- Find another way: Students choose one thing they would normally watch and think of a non-digital way to experience it.
- Create: Students draw, act, sing, demonstrate or tell their chosen idea.
- Discuss: How did people learn and entertain themselves before screens? What could we use instead?
