There is no better way to learn about our Australian wildlife than with a Reptile Encounters school incursion. Reptile Encounters programs have been written by teachers and comply with VELS standards of learning. Our one hour shows are informative, fun and interactive for children of all ages. This is an experience students are sure to remember!

Australian Reptiles

This hands-on show will captivate students as they learn about the weird and wonderful characteristics of Australian reptiles. Everyone will have the chance to interact with spinyleaf stick insects, frogs, turtles, bob-tail lizards, monitor (goanna) lizards, dragon lizards, pythons, and even a crocodile. You won’t believe your eyes!

What will you learn in the Australian Reptile Show?

Pre-School (ages 2-5)

Children will learn about what these animals eat, where they like to live, what they feel like to touch! Discussion is based around body shapes and structure.

Prep – Year 4

Do animals come out during the day time or do they come out at night time? Nocturnal versus diurnal. What do they like to eat? Are they omnivorous, carnivorous or herbivorous? Do they live on the ground or do they live in the trees? Arboreal versus terrestrial. What is it called when animals blend in with their environment?

Year 5 – 8

What is the difference between predators and prey? How do these animals protect themselves in the wild? Do they give birth to live young or do they lay eggs? What is the difference between an ectotherm and an endotherm?

Year 9 – 10

How do reptiles regulate their body temperature? Why do some animals choose to come out at night time? What features do these animals have to protect them from predation? How do these creatures detect their prey? Classification of species, what does it mean? How have these creature evolved over time?

Who is the Australian Reptile Show suited to?

This is by far our most popular show, and it is suited to students of all ages! Everyone gets a thrill out of seeing a goanna lizard or having a python draped over their shoulders!

Insects & Minibeasts

Students will be amazed as they uncover the fascinating world of insects and minibeasts.

Your class will meet and learn about spiny-leaf stick insects, huge goliath stick insects, giant burrowing cockroaches, millipedes, giant centipedes, hermit crabs, tarantulas, scorpions, and even a predator (goanna lizard). Awe inspiring and fascinating!

What will you learn in the Insects & Minibeasts Show?

Pre-School (ages 2-5)

What is a minibeast? How many legs/body parts does it have? Do they have a back bone? How they differ from vertebrate creatures? What do they feel like to touch?

Prep – Year 4

In this show students will look at classification of invertebrates. How many legs/body parts does it have? Is it an insect or is it an arachnid? What do these creatures need to survive in the wild?

Year 5 – 8

What is the difference between predators and prey? Are these creatures carnivorous or are they herbivorous? Are they live bearing or do they produce eggs? How does this affect their survival capabilities?

Year 9 – 10

How do invertebrates fit into the ecosystem? How do you classify invertebrates into the five-kingdom classification system?

Feathers, Fur & Scales

Students will learn the difference between feathered, furry and scaly creatures in this hands-on display of animal life.

Everyone will get an up-close look at a possum, sugar glider, eclectus parrot, red-tail black cockatoo, kookaburra, monitor lizard, python and even a crocodile! Learn about what they eat, where they live and more. Imagine the reaction!

What will you learn in the Feathers, Fur & Scales Show?

Threatened & Endangered Species

This program will enlighten students about a range of animals at risk of extinction. The focus will be on the causes of extinction and what can be done to help the plight of our environment. Animals that will be discussed in the program include growling grass frogs, mary river turtle, yellow spotted monitor, red tail black cockatoo, spotted quoll, woma python, pilbara olive python and salt water crocodile. An eye opening experience!

What will you learn in the Threatened & Endangered Species Show?

Prep – Year 4

What is does it mean for a species to become extinct? Why are some species at risk of extinction? What are the causes and what can be done to help?

Year 5 – 8

Why has the introduction of feral predators had such an impact on our wildlife? Learn about the cane toad and the impact it is having on our environment. How do some species adapt to changes better than others?

Year 9 – 10

What is being done to prevent species from becoming extinct? Discussion will look at breeding programs and reintroduction into the wild. Maintaining genetic diversity in captive bred populations. Protection of native habitat.

Who is the Threatened & Endangered Species Show suited to?

The Threatened & Endangered Species Show is suited to students from Prep to Year 10. It will be an eye opening experience for all, learning about our rare endangered species!
